Singapore’s first offshore Wind Turbine

Sometimes lazy M.M. will read up cute news like this. Being a Nerd, M.M. will occasionally do something more than just reading it. (As a kid, he loves renewable energy)

So NTU has built this horizontal axis wind turbine in our offshore land – Pulau Semakau, just south of Bukom Island. We probably won’t have the chance to see it, Shell Engineer in Bukom may have the chance to see.

Anyway it is capable of generating electricity for 45units of 4rm flat. The average monthly consumption of electricity of 4rm flat is 387 kWh in 2015 (EMA). Breaking it down to per hour usage…

0.5 kWh/flat

That means it is able to generate 22.5 kW on average throughout the day. To put in perspective, we would need 18,000 of such turbine to replace one typical 400MW gas power plant unit (Combined Cycle).  Should they scale it up, they would need 720,000,000sqm of land space. Coincidentally, that is the size of Singapore LOL.

Assuming that they sell it to the grid at the current market price of roughly $70/MWh (EMC), for each wind turbine, they will earn

$1.6 dollar/hour

Assume a plant life of 25 years, for them to break even without factoring time value of money (and leverage), each wind turbine need to be at a huge discount of

$350,000 All Inclusive

Inclusive of manpower, maintenance and land price. Which is highly impossible, I think the unit itself will cost about 1 million. hehehe.

Unless our electricity price increase by 5 fold, wind turbine of this efficiency is not feasible in Singapore at the moment. Hopefully there will be an efficiency breakthrough some day.
